Many people assume dishwashers stay clean because they wash dishes every day. But food particles, grease, soap residue, and mineral buildup can collect inside the machine over time. This can lead to bad smells, cloudy glasses, and poor washing performance.
The good news: cleaning your dishwasher is easy and can be done with products you already have at home. Just follow the steps below.
Start with an empty dishwasher. Remove all dishes, utensils, and racks if possible.
The filter is usually located at the bottom of the dishwasher.
Remove it
Rinse it under warm water
Use a small brush or toothbrush to scrub off grease and food particles
A clean filter helps prevent odors and improves water flow.
Spray arms can get clogged with food or minerals.
Remove the spray arms (if your model allows)
Rinse under water
Use a needle or toothpick to clear any blocked holes
This helps improve cleaning performance.
Place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the top rack.
Run a hot water cycle
Vinegar removes grease, odors, and bacteria.
Sprinkle 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher.
Run a short hot cycle
This refreshes the interior and removes stains.
Use warm soapy water or vinegar solution to wipe:
Door edges
Rubber seals
Control panel
Handle
This removes grease and prevents mold buildup.
Filter: every 2–4 weeks
Deep cleaning: once a month
Spray arms: every 3–6 months
Regular cleaning keeps your dishwasher working efficiently, prevents smells, and helps your dishes come out cleaner and brighter.
If you notice:
Bad smell that doesn’t go away
Water not draining
Dishes still dirty after washing
Leaks or error codes
